Ho Hum Hollow
The Silent Thunder Order has a unique opportunity to procure a wonderful property for use as a residential retreat center. Named Ho Hum Hollow, see the images below to get a feeling for its beauty and tranquility.
We have been offered this property on very favorable terms, and are soliciting members to make substantial gifts toward securing it for the 2012 retreat schedule, to provide for its maintenance and eventual purchase. It will offer residency for a limited staff of student tenants who will be part of the retreat program in future.
Please consider taking the opportunity to visit this unique property. You can attend all or part of the October 26-30 sesshin, which will be held at Ho Hum Hollow through Saturday, then we will return to ASZC for Sunday service and dharma combat (hossen). The Rohatsu retreat will also be held here, and private visits can be arranged.
Contact Roshi if you think you can participate in securing this location as a permanent retreat site for the Silent Thunder Order and Atlanta Soto Zen Center. Also, ask Roshi for the password to see the location/directions page (we have protected it to respect the privacy of the owners).

HHH AlcovyRiver...
The 35 acre site is located about an hour east of ASZC near Between, though its official address is in Monroe, GA. It has two frontages on the Alcovy river.
HHH Briscoe Far...
The old cabin was once inhabited by a miller who ran the grist mill. It is in great shape and its original condition reveals the building techniques of that time.
HHH FallWaterfa...
The main house is situated on a small but active waterfall, a creek that feeds into the Alcovy, and which becomes quite active after a rain.
HHH GreatRoom
The main house has a large great room with a working fireplace, which can serve as a meeting room and gathering place to prepare and serve meals, as well as a second zendo.
HHH MainHouse1
The main house has 2 bedrooms and baths, and will be available for members to use for weekend or longer getaways.
HHH MainHouse2
The main house features a large deck overlooking the waterfall, and a bridging deck with seating area.
HHH MainHouse3
The bridge deck leads to the hiking trail head that leads down to one of the Alcovy river frontages.
HHH MillHouse
Another view of the Briscoe farm house reveals its ample front porch and working fireplace chimney.
HHH Studio
The studio building features a large downstairs studio suitable for the main zendo, and a large bedroom upstairs. Both levels have kitchen and bath facilities.
HHH Waterfall1
The waterfall that runs under the house is delightful in the sound that it makes, even during the relative drought Georgia has been experiencing, the iconic babbling brook.
HHH Waterfall2
From the balcony outside the master bedroom the waterfall provides a continuous background of soothing sound. Great for sleeping and for refreshing the air, as well as for outdoor meditation along its banks.
HHH Waterfall3
Following a rain the babbling brook becomes more of a torrent, cooling the air and providing irrigation for gardening.
HHH Waterfall4
The creek is the central focal of the site, reminding us of the fragility of the environment, and at the same time the great strength and resilience of nature.
